Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a skin rejuvenation procedure performed primarily on the face, neck, or hands. Abrasion and suction combine to remove the dead outer layer of skin and repair skin that is showing the effects of ageing. The vacuum holds the skin to the diamond head and minimal pressure by the therapist is required as a result. Some people liken this to ‘polishing’ the skin.

General Information

At OGAM, we use a diamond head microdermabrasion technique to exfoliate the skin. Our diamond head microdermabrasion may be a little more time consuming, but it is easily tailored to your particular skin needs and can be used on all skin types including sensitive skins and thinner skins. Results achieved are consistent and this procedure requires no downtime and is an ideal lunchtime treatment allowing you to go straight back to work.

At OGAM, we like to follow a microdermabrasion treatment with a medi-facial or facial peel treatment, thereby leaving minimal residue on the skin, and maximising product absorption. We also utilise microdermabrasion in combination with other treatments such as ALA cream in PDT (photodynamic therapy) and IPL / Laser treatments.

For best results, we advise a course of six microdermabrasion treatments. We offer a special six treatment package. We can also advise on a suitable home skincare treatment regime for you. The Skinstitut products speed healing and dramatically reduce inflammation, allowing you to achieve your new look at a faster pace.

Ask our staff about microdermabrasion for treating fine lines, wrinkles, active acne, acne scarring, dry and dehydrated skin, photodamage, stretch marks, dull lifeless skin, and other blemishes.

Questions and Answers

What does microdermabrasion do?

Microdermabrasion gently removes dead skin cells from the skin revealing younger, fresher looking skin while at the same time unclogging pores and stimulating new cell growth.

How long does a treatment take?

Microdermabrasion can take as little as half an hour depending on the skin condition and the area being treated.

Is microdermabrasion painful?

No, microdermabrasion is not painful. Your trained consultant will ensure that you do not experience any discomfort when undergoing microdermabrasion treatment.

How will my skin look immediately after treatment?

Your skin will look amazing. The texture will be instantly smoother. Your pores will be clean. Blackheads removed. Overall your skin will look very clean and smooth. However, it is important to remember that this is a series of treatments and that the really significant improvements will not be seen until the series is complete.

Some skin flushing can occur after your treatment as the increased blood flow brings in more nutrients, vitamins, and especially oxygen to renew the skin and stimulate collagen.

How many treatments will I require?

Your consultant will advise you on the number and frequency of treatments required dependant on the skin type being treated. Generally, six treatments are required, with the first three in 14 day intervals and the next three in 21 to 28 day intervals. Then this may be followed by maintenance treatments once every 4 – 6 weeks. Severe acne may require weekly treatments to begin with.

When not to use microdermabrasion

  • Viral lesions, active herpes simplex (i.e. currently have cold sores)
  • Eczema or dermatitis
  • Broken skin
  • Vascular lesions
  • Recent sunburn
  • Recent use of Roaccutane (oral anti-acne medication)

Medi-Facials

Facial treatments at OGAM are therapeutic medical facials. We only apply products that deliver real change and benefit to your skin.

The Skinstitut Medi-Facial

The Skinstitut Medi-Facial uses Skinstitut products to provide a deep glycolic acid cleanse and glycolic acid scrub exfoliation which is repeated in two stages. This is followed by steaming and extractions as required. Facial massage ensures great absorption of the amazing enzyme mask which mops up all the free radical damage and brightens the complexion. Anti-oxidant therapy follows. Next, the hydration mask ensures enhanced hydration and minimal redness. A course of six treatments are recommended. This medi-facial gives you an instant lift and glow that will not go without notice.

The Anti-Ageing Medi-Facial/Peel

The anti-ageing medi-facial/peel treatment is designed to rebuild and restructure broken down skin. This treatment includes slow release AHA’s (alpha-hydroxyacids),
marine collagen, botanical-origin vitamin A, phospholipids, and collagen breakdown enzyme inhibitor. This restores the lipid barrier of the epidermis and assists in alleviating dry skin conditions; improves skin complexion, tone, and texture; prevents breakdown of collagen; increases hydration; strengthens and restores skin resilience; and provides anti-bacterial support which is an excellent benefit in acne prone skin. Excellent for dull, lifeless, aged, or acneic skin. The skin may remain sensitive for 1-3 days after the treatment and active skincare products containing AHA’s, exfoliants, vitamin c, and vitamin A should not be used during this time.

Skin Needling

Roll back the years with this revolutionary technology.

Skin needling is used to stimulate tissue regeneration, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT). If you suffer from uneven, dull or lifeless skin, wrinkles, open pores, pigmentation, scarring, stretch marks, or hair loss, then skin needling is a treatment option for you. The skin needle pen device is a pen shaped device with an insert studded with very fine needles. It is a medical device used in micro-needling to break down old scar tissue and to stimulate skin cells to proliferate. This cell multiplication results in the formation of new tissue layers of elastin and collagen fibres as well as in new capillaries for an improved blood supply. This treatment can be used on all skin types and all skin colours. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The treatment involves:

  • cleansing of the skin
  • numbing of the skin with numbing cream
  • application of an active serum particular to the skin condition
  • skin needling with about 15-20 passes
  • further active serum
  • post needling face mask
  • post treatment care

How often?

For collagen induction therapy, we recommend to start with 3 treatments spaced approx 4 weeks apart. For scar reduction therapy, we recommend an average of 3 to 5 treatments with the aim of a 70 – 80% improvement.

Any downtime?

The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last 24 – 72 hours on average. Post treatment care will be advised to you.
